How would you feel if your company was fined GBP200,000 and ordered to pay costs of more than GBP17,000 for health and safety issues even though no-one was hurt? Ask Renault.

It all looks a bit silly - until the story comes out. From 5 October 2015 until 29 September 2016, Renault Retail Group UK Limited failed to ensure that car lifts were in good repair and good working order. The company was warned that the lifts were not in an acceptable condition but failed to prevent their use by mechanics and failed to repair them. What was worse, the same issue was found at two different sites.

The fact that no one was injured is not a defence and Renault Retail Group UK Limited, Concord Road, West Avenue, pleaded guilty to breaching Regulation 5 (1) of the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER) and Regulation 10 (3) (a) of the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations (LOLER) 1998. The company was fined GBP200,000 and ordered to pay HSE's costs of GBP17,217.84.
