Don't say "totaling," do say "totalling."

Don't say that:

Totaling

Do say this:

Totalling

Why?:

There is a construction in English that says that a double consonant modifies the pronunciation of a preceding vowel.

Therefore the word "totaling" would be pronounced toh-tail-ing which is not what we want at all, is it?

The use of the double "l" softens the vowel, so that it is pronounced toh-ta-ling which is what we do want.
