Obituary:

Nicky Hayden was born to be a motorcycle racer. Literally, His parents and siblings raced dirt track bikes and that was where Hayden learned his craft. In the MotiGP era when riders returned to the technique of sliding the rear wheel on entry to corners, effectively opposite-locking around bends, he was at home on tarmac racing circuits. In 2006, he racked up points in the MotoGP championship while Valentino Rossi was out with a hand injury. Rossi came back at the end of the season to try to prevent Hayden taking the title but slid off, leaving the American to win. Rossi said of Hayden that he was the best team mate he ever had.

But his successes were punctuated with many crashes, mostly not causing him serious injury. It is of supreme irony that, having transferred from MotoGP to World Superbikes where the characteristics of the machines suited him better, he was killed in a road crash while out cycling to wind down from the Italian round of SBK.

He suffered massive head trauma and died after five days in intensive care.
