Sex tourist and kiddie porn maker jailed for 190 years

An American school teacher has been jailed for 190 years for child abuse.

Robert Ruben Ornelas, 66, of Santa Ana, California, USA, has a long history of abusing children. A former teacher, he has made multiple trips to the Philippines where he sexually assaulted girls as young as eight years old and made videos of the abuse.

Convicted of two counts of engaging in illegal sexual conduct overseas (an offence other countries would do well to copy), three of producing child pornography and two of possessing child pornography, his trips were over a period of years. The trail related to only three: one is each of 2006, 2008 and 2012.

The FBI received a tip that Ornelas had a large collection of child pornography but they did not expect, when they started to examine the material, to find that he had "starred" in some of his own productions.

What is surprising is that, in these days of supposedly joined up immigration and flight information, Ornelas, who had a history of the sexual abuse of children going back as far as the 1960s, but he was still able to buy tickets and fly to a hot-spot such as The Philippines. And that's before one wonders how he secured a career as a teacher.

The two girls featured in his video travelled to the USA to give evidence.

“Ornelas took advantage of impoverished children in a foreign country, away from the scrutiny of the United States, where his past involved abusing children,” said Deirdre Fike, the Assistant Director in Charge of the FBI's Los Angeles Field Office.

Well, yes. Him and many others, which is why better data analysis is needed.

“This sentence should serve as a powerful deterrent to child predators who mistakenly believe the internet and a plane ticket will enable them to indulge their perverse desires with impunity,” said Joseph Macias, special agent in charge of Homeland Security Investigations in Los Angeles. “HSI will continue to work closely with its law enforcement partners here in the U.S. and around the world to hold these dangerous sexual predators accountable for their actions. There can be no place for the abuse of foreign children by our citizens.”

Didn't do too well this time, did it?
