Whatever happened to "Brexit"?

Editorial Staff

Britons remain European. The deadline for the UK to leave the EU came and went amidst frantic media activity that was eclipsed only by the frantic Theresa May.

The essential point, that May exceeded her authority and told the EU it had a deal when she had not even put it to Parliament for discussion, has not gone away. The EU, used to countries with Presidents, can't get its head around a democracy, and says, in effect, "We've done a deal with your head of state so stop faffing around and make it happen." A prime minister is not a head of state and does not have the power that presidents have. Indeed, the fact that the EU decided to have a president is one of the things that UK democrats took issue with: after all, the UK has a head of state: it's the monarch.
