Skype's payment page shows GBP10, then they charge GBP12.

Lessons in taking screenshots. After I wrote about Skype's pricing scheme, I logged onto Skype to see a message saying that my transaction remained outstanding. I clicked on it and was surprised: it had been adjusted to show that I should pay GBP10, not GBP12. OK, I thought, click to buy. How I wish I'd been realistic (some may say sceptical) and taken a screen shot. Previous story: Credit card companies should beware of payments to Skype.

Today, three days later, an e-mail has arrived thanking me for my payment of GBP12. But, because I didn't take the screenshot, I have no proof. Sure, I know what I saw - and I know that because I was so irritated by their practice revealed in my previous article that I would not have bought it at GBP12. It's a trick, a con, a swindle, bad practice, a fraud.. don't tell me something costs x then charge me x+20%. So I would not have ordered it, simply on principle.

But they continued with their fraudulent practices. The page that showed GBP10 had exactly the same presentation as the page that had showed GBP12 which I published last week. But now it's more than irritating, it's more than the cause for an article with a tinge of humour. Now it's an out and out fraud. The amount charged is not the amount on the page that appeared on my screen.

To say it's going to cost X then charge more is an out and out fraud. The question is how many other people are ripped off by Skype in this way, or am I a special case?

It's time to find out and that means going loud. And that means bringing it to the attention to the most consumer friendly prosecutors in the USA: California's Attorney General Xavier Becerra.
